We selected the native brook trout for our logo because it is our keystone species.  To protect it, we need to preserve all of the values of the Savage River watershed.

    Garrett County Commissioners

    Tuesday January 17th, Garrett County Commissioners meeting room in courthouse at 4:30 pm

    During this public session, YRWA and SRWA will ask for assistance to develop and implement water quality baseline and continued monitoring in regards to Marcellus shale gas drilling, and for financial support for monitoring equipment and laboratory analyses. YRWA and SRWA will begin baseline water quality monitoring this spring.

    Meeting of the Youghiogheny River Watershed Association

    Garrett College at CAOS building off Laker Drive at 7:00 pm

    SRWA members and interested persons are invited to attend this meeting of the Youghiogheny River Watershed Association (YRWA). Guest speakers Dan Brower and Tony Prochaska of MD Department of Natural Resources will discuss the MD Stream Waders program. Stream Waders uses volunteers to monitor and assess waterway health, with the results put into the MD Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) data base. According to Smokey Stanton, YRWA President, Stream Waders is a potential structure to be used in conducting water quality baseline and continued monitoring of streams in Garrett County. The presentation will include a map developed by DNR of sites they believe should be monitored due to Marcellus shale gas drilling.

    SRWA Meeting


    Dave Kazyak, Graduate Student at UMCES Appalachian Laboratory  will present results from ongoing research on brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, in the Savage River watershed. Dave is part of a large-scale tagging project which aims to better understand the life history of this species in our area. The public is welcome to attend.

    Economic Impacts of Gas Development


    Garrett College, 7PM

    CitizenShale will host a free educational event. The speakers are Paul Durham of Garrett County Board of Realtors and Emily Wurth of Food and Water Watch will discuss economic issues, particularly land values, land use, and jobs claims as they relate to shale gas development. Durham's talk is an opportunity for leaseholders to understand the impact of gas development on their land values, mortgage potential, and general enjoyment of land, which brings a great value to many of the properties in Western Maryland. Wurth will discuss Food and Water Watch's analysis of industry and government job claims and other economic impacts of the gas extraction industry.
